New thud client - please test!

Admin

http://www.thudgame.com/node/561 - please test and let me know what problems you encounter, especially any problems that aren't in the current live one.

The download size has dropped from 279k to just 59k, so the download should be as fast as greased poop off a Teflon shovel.

When starting a game for the first time, you may see placeholder graphics, while the real graphics download. This may take some time, as it has to download up to 37 files for the skin.

The second time should display the graphics immediately, as they'll be cached.

If the initial download time is too long, I'll have to work on making the applets signed, so we can cache that information semi-permanently on the hard drive, rather than having to re-download each time. Or just allow more than 4 downloads at a time. Or put the images in a zip, and just have the audio as separate files. Or...

Anyway, please let me know if it works!

The red/blue squares are the default graphics that the client displays while the real graphics load (yeah, I know, they're a bit pants). I should add a "T", "D" and "R" to them, I guess.

Unfortunately, you can't create an image with transp... hey, I just figured out how to do an image with transparency in java 1.1! I rock! I can include a 1x1 transparent gif, and then copy and resize that as the background for any transparent images I need!

OK, *before* I figured that out, there was no way in Java 1.1 to create transparent backgrounds for images that you created from scratch: only stuff you loaded in as a gif could have a transparent background. So yeah, I can make that a bit prettier without much work Smile

If you can see the default images for longer than a few seconds, that means that it's failing to download the skin images from the server. Hrm, I wonder how I can debug that? I'll check to see if there's anything in the logs, and add some more logging stuff, and get it displaying stuff to the console for debugging. I'll ask you some more stuff about that if you still have the same problem in the next release Smile

Anyone else having this problem? Anyone getting any other bugs?

Oograh Boike reports that his board does not resize when he resizes the window - is anyone else getting this problem? If so, what Java Virtual Machine do you have installed in your browser? (Windows users: you can usually do this by opening the Java console by right-clicking the icon in the Windows notification tray by the clock)

I have tested the resizing whilst playing Angua
it works for me but on the larger sizes the trolls/dwarfs heads get cut on the top row.

Sound does not work even if you tick the option

The scrolling text box jumps to the beginning occasionally in both windows the move turn thing still happen in the shared chat window not the game one

If one player is in old client and the other in the new and does the challenge old game does not resume and also the game window comes up for player in the old client but not the new one.

The rich text thing does not work if you try you just get the codes printed
