As I understand it there's always an equivalent cost in thudpoints - you get the option at the "checkout" stage whether you want to use points or cash.
(I'm not 100% certain on that, so you'll want to check it, but I think it's the case)

in any case you'd have to give card details before you actually purchase it,so if the option for using thudpoints doesn't come up you don't have to go further
